How to become a successful copywriter and get the job of your dream

If you are passionate about writing and know what words to use to inspire action and ideas, then a copywriting career is what you should be looking into. Copywriters create engaging and persuasive content for websites, emails, marketing companies, etc. There are many essays on the theme, where you can find a literally step-by-step guide on how to become a copywriter. And once you have decided to become a successful one, there are two main points you should concentrate on: decide what type of writer you want to be and find your copywriting niche. In this article, we will talk about these two aspects in detail, to help you better understand how to choose a sphere you want to write about and how to write passionately.

What type of writer do you want to be?

Who is a copywriter, exactly? It seems that not everybody clearly understands what a copywriter does. Many of us don’t know the difference between a copywriter and a content writer, while these are different. So, let us see what the difference is between the one and the other. Copywriting is the act of writing a copy. We call a copy every piece of promotional writing that aims to sell us something, for example, a brand or service. In other words, copywriting is to create texts with the intent of selling something. These texts include essays, emails, articles, brochures, scripts and many more. The main purpose of copywriting is to generate sales – it is a call to action. Not only do you have to inform and convince your audience, but tell them how to act.

But there are other texts online we can read, and these texts don’t sell us anything. They can be informative or give you deep knowledge about a specific topic. That is content writing. The intent is to engage the reader and increase the conversion rate.

In both cases, the writer must know the theme he is writing about. He should also consider that copywriting and content writing operate in different time frames. Copywriting is quick and urgent, while content writing is slower and generates long-term engagement. It does not mean that you don’t spend hours or days working on the copywriting material, but copywriting should always offer some kind of urgent opportunity that the reader will miss if they don’t start acting now. That is how the reader is getting inspired to make a quick decision. And content writing doesn’t need that kind of emotion-driven quick pace, because it has a completely different goal. Its purpose is to inform, educate, help etc.

Find your copywriting niche

After you have made the decision to become a copywriter, one of the best ways to become successful is to choose a specific niche and become an expert. This means that you would have to choose a specific sphere to work with. So, think about what you’re interested in and what you would be best at writing. The copywriters might be divided into five categories:

  • Social media copywriter. Writes materials for social media posts and paid ads, for example on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
  • SEO copywriter. Makes sure that the target audience sees content using search engine optimization with the help of keyword research, website content, SEO blog etc.
  • Technical copywriter. Explains the benefits and usage of a product, creating user guides, product packaging, FAQs, and user manuals.
  • Marketing copywriter. Creates copies for marketing and advertising. For example, digital ads, press releases, email campaigns, promotional materials etc.
  • Brand copywriter. Writes about brand values, the brand story, the brand identity etc. For example, brand style guidelines, slogans, tag lines, mission statements, and vision statements.

If you decide to become a copywriter, and you have chosen your niche, then all that’s left to do is to choose what kind of copywriter you’re going to be and what will you write about. Choose the sphere you want to write about, you are interested in, you want to know everything about and become an expert. There are thousands of variants you can choose from. Are you interested in Space? You can write about that. Maybe you like design or architecture? Then go and look for architecture companies that are looking for a copywriter. How about sports, or racing? You can write about that too. For example, you can write about games, e-sports and new online casinos because it is a big entertainment sphere which is constantly growing globally. How about books? Do you like to read? If your answer is yes, then maybe you should find a bookstore and write copywriting materials about books to help them increase sales. As you can see, there are a lot of options for you there, and all you need is to find the right for you.
